Alibaba releases Qwen-Image-2.1: open-weight 7B image model that the team says outperforms closed models
Alibaba's Qwen AI team published Qwen-Image-2.1, an open-weight image-generation and editing model with a 7 billion-parameter visual component that the team claims outperforms most closed models on their internal benchmark; independent evaluations are still pending. The model supports RGBA output, up to ten reference images, local edits via masks or painted marks, claimed inference speedups via architecture and KV-cache reuse, runs on consumer GPUs (e.g., RTX 3090), and is available on Hugging Face, GitHub, and ModelScope under a research-only license that prohibits commercial use without separate licensing.
