Google DeepMind and WRI release ForTy: a 10‑m global 2020 forest typology map

Google DeepMind and the World Resources Institute published ForTy (Forest Typology), a global 2020 land‑cover map at 10‑meter resolution that assigns each pixel to one of six classes (primary forest, naturally regenerating forest, planted forest, plantation, tree crops, other). ForTy uses DeepMind’s AlphaEarth Foundations embeddings plus multi-stage image‑recognition models (with assistance from Google’s Gemini) and reached 90.2% overall accuracy on a sample of 8,190 sites; it outperformed European Commission maps on the same test data but detected only about half of tree crops and planted forests and ~60% of plantations.

Apple discloses deal to hire Huxe AI team and license Huxe technology

Apple told the European Commission it has agreed to make employment offers to certain Huxe AI employees and to receive a non-exclusive license to Huxe’s intellectual property, according to a regulatory filing. Report: Google pays about 100 publishers small, uneven fees for content used in Gemini and AI Overviews

The Information reports Google is running a pilot that pays roughly 100 digital publishers for content used in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and the Gemini chatbot, but payments vary widely (from under $1,000 for small sites to more than $1 million for one publisher) and many participants say they don't understand how amounts are calculated or why they change. Some large publishers are refusing to join; independent publishers filed an EC complaint in July 2025, Penske Media sued in September 2025, and the European Commission opened an antitrust probe in December 2025; a German court has also ruled AI Overviews are Google’s own content.

Von der Leyen warns of AI agents 'escaping' environments, invites frontier labs to EU talks

In her 2026 State of the Union address, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called AI foundational to the economy and security, warned that models could enable unprecedented hacking and that AI agents 'escaping their environment' are a preview of risks, citing the Hugging Face incident. She said the EU will work with Canada, the UK and other partners on model evaluation, verification and safety, invite major frontier labs to talks, and stressed the AI Act is crucial to put guardrails in place.

Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez warns against letting dominant AI labs set safety rules, criticizes Anthropic roadmap

In a blog post, Cohere co-founder and CEO Aidan Gomez argues that allowing a small number of market-dominant AI companies to define safety standards and seek antitrust exemptions would risk creating a cartel that protects incumbents and limits competition. Gomez supports independent review of powerful systems but warns that proposals like the roadmap published by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei raise questions about who writes standards and who gets to participate; he cites past regulatory failures (SEC-designated bond-rating firms and Europe's Motor Vehicle Block Exemption) as cautionary examples.
