MIT uses AI to formulate mRNA lipid nanoparticles stable at room temperature

MIT researchers (Koch Institute and CSAIL) used a machine-learning algorithm to screen ~50 FDA-approved excipients and identify formulations that make FDA-like lipid nanoparticle (LNP) mRNA vaccines far more heat-resistant—remaining stable at room temperature for up to a year or at nearly 100°F (~38°C) for two months. In mice, COVID-19 vaccine formulations derived from the AI-guided optimization produced immune responses comparable to an mRNA vaccine similar to Moderna’s; the work is reported in Nature Biotechnology.

MIT names David Siegel as 2026–27 Innovation Fellow to pursue AI for scientific discovery

MIT announced that computer scientist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist David Siegel will serve as its Innovation Fellow for the 2026–27 academic year, working with the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing to explore how artificial intelligence can accelerate scientific discovery. Siegel, co‑founder of Two Sigma and founder of the nonprofit Open Athena (which is developing the public Marin 535‑billion‑parameter model), brings philanthropy and industry AI experience to the role.

MIT researchers develop xvr — an AI that rapidly aligns surgical X‑rays with patients’ 3D scans

Researchers at MIT’s CSAIL and clinical collaborators developed xvr, an AI system that adapts to an individual patient in about five minutes and automatically registers intraoperative X‑rays to preoperative 3D scans in seconds with reported sub‑millimeter precision. The method, published in Nature, outperformed prior AI approaches by roughly an order of magnitude across diverse patients, body parts, and procedures.

MIT's CrysVCD uses AI to screen out chemically unstable material designs

Researchers at MIT developed CrysVCD, a computational tool that helps identify chemically unstable crystalline material designs so they can be filtered out earlier in the discovery process. The tool could reduce the substantial time and cost currently spent screening and discarding impractical candidates.
