Granite Switch 4.1.1 patch adds multilingual ASR and improved Decision adapter

Granite Switch 4.1.1 is a backward-compatible patch to the modular Switch architecture that updates Granite Speech ASR (multilingual speech-to-text with native punctuation and capitalization) and the Decision adapter in granitelib-core (improved performance on the Jev Decision Index). The release required no base-model retraining — teams compose and deploy updated adapters, and Granite says an Adapter SDK and tutorials for third-party adapters are coming.

OpenAI reports strong internal results for GPT-6.1 Sol migrating COBOL to modern languages

OpenAI published a blog post reporting that its GPT-6.1 Sol model achieved 87% behavior-preservation accuracy on COBOL-to-modern-language migrations at low reasoning effort and up to 98% at higher effort in its internal tests, and said migrations are judged successful only if all tests pass. The article notes Anthropic has promoted a COBOL modernization playbook and Claude Code without public benchmarks, and experts cautioned these results do not yet solve the broader, risky engineering challenge of replacing critical legacy systems.

IBM updates Granite Speech suite with granite-speech-5.0-2b and two revised models

IBM released three updates to its Granite Speech collection: a new speech-language model, granite-speech-5.0-2b, and revised granite-speech-5.0-470m-turboctc and granite-speech-4.1-2b-plus. The 5.0-2b model (trained on ~390,000 hours of public audio) expands multilingual transcription and translation and improves English ASR robustness; the Turbo CTC 470M revision adds multilingual support, native punctuation, and faster runtime (~19,870 RTFx); the 4.1-2b-plus revision improves speaker attribution, timestamps, long-form WER, and keyword biasing. All models ship under Apache 2.0 with integrations for Transformers, vLLM, llama.cpp and mlx-audio.

OpenAI says GPT-6 models much better at COBOL, Fortran and Visual Basic

OpenAI reports that its GPT‑6 family shows major improvements on low‑resource, legacy programming languages. On MultiLangBench, GPT‑6 Astra reached an average test pass rate of 87.4% across 20 languages (versus ~38% for GPT‑5.6 Terra); GPT‑6 Luna scored 40.3% (≈37.9% for GPT‑5.6 Terra) at much lower cost. On a COBOL migration benchmark, GPT‑6.1 Sol achieved 86.6% accuracy at low reasoning effort (5.4% for GPT‑5.6 Sol) and up to 97.9% with higher reasoning effort.

tokenizers v1 release-candidate benchmarks show major encode/decode speedups

The article presents benchmarks and engineering changes in the release candidate of tokenizers v1, showing often-tens× speedups versus v0.23 and comparing to other tokenization libraries via the tokbench suite. The v1 refactor preserves token IDs, API, vocabulary and model support while introducing SIMD-friendly hand-written pre-tokenization, model-stage optimizations, multithreading and broader platform testing with contributors such as IBM and NVIDIA.
