Anthropic launches Claude Haiku 5.5 with big price cuts and benchmark gains

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, a faster, lower‑cost small model aimed at high‑volume tasks; Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs ~75% less on average than Haiku 4.5 and up to 90% less for prompts ≤100,000 tokens. The company also halved Sonnet 5.5 cache‑read costs, added monthly API credits for subscribers, updated SDKs with beta computer/browser use, and says Haiku 5.5 outperforms its predecessor (and compares favorably to OpenAI’s GPT‑6 Luna) on several benchmarks and agentic coding tests.

OpenAI will add invisible text watermarking (textGrain) for ChatGPT in the EU; API opt-in worldwide

OpenAI is rolling out textGrain, an invisible statistical watermarking system, for ChatGPT and Codex users in the European Union to comply with the EU AI Act, and will let API customers worldwide opt in to watermarking (including via cloud partners such as Microsoft Azure). OpenAI says textGrain performed competitively in internal tests, will be open-sourced, but detection reliability varies by text length and topic and degrades substantially with edits, and initial access to the detector will be limited to selected researchers and organizations.

OpenAI halts adversarial-distillation campaign to steal models' reasoning, but researchers still extracted reasoning via Azure

OpenAI reported it detected and shut down a coordinated 'adversarial distillation' campaign that attempted to extract protected chain-of-thought reasoning from its models, identifying a surge of requests in July and banning thousands of accounts by July 28. Researchers led by Joachim Schaeffer later showed the same extraction methods could still retrieve reasoning when models were accessed through some cloud platforms (notably Microsoft Azure), including pulling reasoning from GPT-6 Astra and several Anthropic models until those endpoints were patched in late September.
