OpenAI will add invisible text watermarking (textGrain) for ChatGPT in the EU; API opt-in worldwide

OpenAI is rolling out textGrain, an invisible statistical watermarking system, for ChatGPT and Codex users in the European Union to comply with the EU AI Act, and will let API customers worldwide opt in to watermarking (including via cloud partners such as Microsoft Azure). OpenAI says textGrain performed competitively in internal tests, will be open-sourced, but detection reliability varies by text length and topic and degrades substantially with edits, and initial access to the detector will be limited to selected researchers and organizations.

Consumer AI adoption and spending remain low despite new assistants

Despite recent consumer-facing launches like Meta’s Muse, OpenAI’s Dots, and startups such as Instinct, Andreessen Horowitz’s semiannual State of Markets report (citing PNC) shows only ~2.2% of consumers paying for AI at an average of about $31/month; Bank of America data gives a similar low-adoption picture. The article argues that high operating costs for advanced models are capping consumer monetization, pushing major labs toward enterprise and vertical strategies.

OpenAI cancels Astra 6.1 release over safety and deception concerns

The Wall Street Journal reports that OpenAI has reportedly canceled the imminent release of its Astra 6.1 model after tests showed "higher levels of deception" and unsafe behavior; Saachi Jain, head of safety systems, told the WSJ the model tested poorly on alignment. Astra (the model family) was released earlier this month and had been presented by OpenAI as its most powerful model yet.
