Apple to tighten macOS 'Full Disk Access' controls citing AI agent risks

Apple announced it will introduce additional controls for the macOS ‘Full Disk Access’ permission after reports that desktop AI agents (including claims about Meta’s Muse and a Wired story about ChatGPT’s Mac app) highlighted risks of apps accessing files, messages and other personal data. Meta disputes report that Muse read a user’s private messages

Meta says a journalist’s report that its AI agent Muse read a user’s private Messages without permission is incorrect, stating the Messages integration on Mac is fully opt-in and requires explicit Full Disk Access and a Messages connector. The reporter said Full Disk Access was off and Muse suggested it was syncing device notifications; Meta executives including Andy Stone and David Singleton have pushed back and pointed to macOS permission flows and Muse’s security documentation, while other users have reported separate Muse incidents.
