Google to launch TPU-equipped satellite for Project Suncatcher on Oct 1, 2026
Google will launch a satellite carrying its Tensor Processing Units aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on Oct. 1, 2026 as part of Project Suncatcher to test how TPUs perform under spaceflight stresses, radiation, and thermal extremes. The mission will also trial heat-pipe and radiator cooling; Google says the chips can run for about 15 minutes before needing to be turned off, and it plans two additional satellites next year.
KEY POINTS

WHY IT MATTERS
If validated, running TPUs in orbit could enable solar-powered, orbital AI compute that reshapes latency, resilience and infrastructure economics for large-scale AI services.
SOURCES & TIMELINE
2It’s the first step toward Google’s goal of handling AI tasks from space. Google is getting ready to launch a satellite with its AI processors to test how well they perform in space, as reported earlier by The New York Times . The move is part of Google’s Project Suncatcher , the company’s experimental initiative that could eventually put AI data centers into orbit. The satellite, equipped with Google’s Tensor Proc…
Google wants to put AI data centers in space. Its "Suncatcher" project would run AI infrastructure in orbit on solar power. On October 1, an experimental satellite called "MVP" is set to launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the New York Times reports . The "refrigerator-size satellite" was built and tested at Planet Labs in San Francisco. Google VP James Manyika says it should p…
