Survey: Foundation models reshape AI across game development and play

This arXiv preprint (arXiv:2609.16679v1) surveys literature on how foundation models and learned game-world models are being used across six roles in the game lifecycle—playing/acting, modeling players and games, designing, building/maintaining, runtime generation/adaptation, and testing/evaluation. The authors map cross-role connections (e.g., world models training agents, designs driving executable implementations), note that many capabilities do not yet transfer across engines, interfaces, or player contexts, and highlight that evaluation is mature for bounded game-playing but less established for persistent learned worlds, sustained runtime adaptation, validated player modeling, and automated testing.

KEY POINTS

  1. This arXiv preprint (arXiv:2609.16679v1) surveys literature on how foundation models and learned game-world models are being used across six roles in the game lifecycle—playing/acting, modeling players and games, designing, building/maintaining, runtime generation/adaptation, and testing/evaluation.
  3. The paper organizes and clarifies where foundation-model capabilities transfer across game development roles and where game-specific validation and evaluation remain necessary, guiding research and deployment priorities.
