Google’s Suncatcher prototype satellite is online and running DeepMind’s Gemma 4
Google’s prototype Suncatcher satellite, carrying one TPU and generating up to 1 kW, is operational after a Falcon 9 launch and has run inference with DeepMind’s Gemma 4 (engineers even prompted it to write a haiku). The mission will test TPU performance under thermal stress and space radiation (the chip can only be powered ~20 minutes at a time), and Google plans two higher-power, optically linked TPU satellites in 2027 to demonstrate distributed in-orbit inference.
KEY POINTS
- Google’s prototype Suncatcher satellite, carrying one TPU and generating up to 1 kW, is operational after a Falcon 9 launch and has run inference with DeepMind’s Gemma 4 (engineers even prompted it to write a haiku).
- The mission will test TPU performance under thermal stress and space radiation (the chip can only be powered ~20 minutes at a time), and Google plans two higher-power, optically linked TPU satellites in 2027 to demonstrate distributed in-orbit inference.
- It demonstrates running large-model inference in orbit and gathers real radiation/thermal data on TPU reliability—key steps toward space-based distributed data-center networks.
