TACS-RF: LLM-driven agentic synthesis of RF/mmWave modules, validated on 240–251 GHz transmitter

The paper introduces TACS-RF, a framework where a coding LLM agent (Claude Opus 4.8) directly drives industry EDA tools (Cadence Virtuoso/Spectre, Calibre, Cadence EMX, Ansys HFSS) to design RF and mmWave modules. The authors validate the approach by agentically designing a 240–251 GHz sub-THz transmitter in 90 nm SiGe BiCMOS—producing subsystem blocks (VCO, drivers, doubler, antenna, matching) and a parasitic-extracted, EM-verified transmitter delivering +5.1 to +6.3 dBm across an 11 GHz tuning range, −80 to −88 dBc/Hz phase noise at 1 MHz offset, and 361 mW DC power.

KEY POINTS

  1. The paper introduces TACS-RF, a framework where a coding LLM agent (Claude Opus 4.8) directly drives industry EDA tools (Cadence Virtuoso/Spectre, Calibre, Cadence EMX, Ansys HFSS) to design RF and mmWave modules.
  3. This demonstrates a practical LLM-driven workflow that interfaces with real EDA tools to produce transistor-level RF/mmWave hardware, marking a step toward semi-autonomous 'text-to-ASIC' design and potentially changing design productivity and verification practices.
