PORA: Paired Outcome-guided Reasoning Allocation for LLM agents

The new arXiv paper (arXiv:2610.27119v1) introduces PORA, a method that learns when an LLM agent should use short versus long reasoning by training on paired rollouts from the same state (one short, one long) to estimate downstream value; at inference a controller trades that estimate off against a learned budget pressure to choose short or long reasoning. PORA yields large gains across tasks — e.g., +17.4–32.9 percentage points on BFCL memory — and matches or outperforms always-long reasoning on code and math while using substantially fewer actor tokens and model requests.

KEY POINTS

  2. PORA yields large gains across tasks — e.g., +17.4–32.9 percentage points on BFCL memory — and matches or outperforms always-long reasoning on code and math while using substantially fewer actor tokens and model requests.
  3. This matters because PORA lets LLM agents allocate limited reasoning budget adaptively, improving final-task quality and reducing compute and model calls in multi-step decision problems.
