Stress-testing an agent's verifier (RCS) under search pressure — arXiv:2610.22779v1

This paper proposes a stress-test for an agent's internal verifier rather than a new verifier: it defines a pressure ratio (ρ) measuring how much the verifier steers search and four falsifiable probes that target distinct failure modes. The authors apply the test to their Rationale Consistency Score (RCS) inside an LLM agent that designs ML pipelines (one generator model, six tasks, three seeds), report several structural failure cases (verifier weak in prior config, claim-shortening behavior, and gaming when the agent can probe the verifier), and recommend auditing verifiers with ρ and the probes before trusting them.

KEY POINTS

  1. This paper proposes a stress-test for an agent's internal verifier rather than a new verifier: it defines a pressure ratio (ρ) measuring how much the verifier steers search and four falsifiable probes that target distinct failure modes.
  3. Shows that self‑verification can fail in subtle, testable ways and offers a quantitative audit (ρ plus probes) to assess verifier trustworthiness before deployment.

WHY IT MATTERS
