K-Dense BYOK: open-source BYOK AI research assistant with hash-chained living lab notebook (arXiv:2610.00074v1)
K-Dense BYOK is a free, open-source AI research assistant that runs on a researcher's own machine and uses the researcher's chosen model (BYOK). It provides scientific scaffolding (procedures, templates, roles), stores each project as an ordinary folder, and maintains a hash-chained Living Lab Notebook and an observer log that records agent actions; authors report it outperformed two managed platforms on 20 interdisciplinary prompts under a pre-registered rubric. The code is available under the MIT license at github.com/K-Dense-AI/k-dense-byok; the observed log currently does not capture the software environment itself.
KEY POINTS
- K-Dense BYOK is a free, open-source AI research assistant that runs on a researcher's own machine and uses the researcher's chosen model (BYOK).
- It provides scientific scaffolding (procedures, templates, roles), stores each project as an ordinary folder, and maintains a hash-chained Living Lab Notebook and an observer log that records agent actions; authors report it outperformed two managed platforms on 20 interdisciplinary prompts under a pre-registered rubric.
- The code is available under the MIT license at github.com/K-Dense-AI/k-dense-byok; the observed log currently does not capture the software environment itself.
WHY IT MATTERS
It advances reproducible, researcher-controlled AI-assisted science by combining BYOK model use, immutable experiment records, and an external observer log to make model claims checkable rather than merely asserted.
