MIT uses AI to formulate mRNA lipid nanoparticles stable at room temperature
MIT researchers (Koch Institute and CSAIL) used a machine-learning algorithm to screen ~50 FDA-approved excipients and identify formulations that make FDA-like lipid nanoparticle (LNP) mRNA vaccines far more heat-resistant—remaining stable at room temperature for up to a year or at nearly 100°F (~38°C) for two months. In mice, COVID-19 vaccine formulations derived from the AI-guided optimization produced immune responses comparable to an mRNA vaccine similar to Moderna’s; the work is reported in Nature Biotechnology.
