Sanders and Casar introduce bill to ban ‘artificial superintelligence’ and pause frontier AI
Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, which would criminalize development of artificial superintelligence and pause development of advanced 'frontier' AI models until a new scientist‑led Department of Artificial Intelligence is established. The bill would require companies to get permission from that department and could impose penalties of up to 20 years in prison on company leaders or 'rogue actors' who violate the law, according to the bill's one‑pager.
