Harvard physicist Matthew Schwartz publishes BootLoops, an open-source AI harness for exact scientific calculations

Matthew Schwartz (Harvard; visiting researcher at Anthropic) developed BootLoops, an open-source harness that uses Anthropic's Claude to perform exact scientific calculations and bridge gaps between disciplines; the team generated 36 manuscripts across 18 fields and the code is available on GitHub. Schwartz reports novel results (e.g., computed integrals, a solved 20‑year ecological equation, population‑genetics signals) but warns models often misjudge completion, can draw incorrect conclusions from correct calculations, and require human verification.

MIT team develops lexicon-based ML tool to predict imminent suicide risk from Crisis Text Line conversations

Researchers at MIT’s McGovern Institute (Daniel Low and Satra Ghosh) built a curated suicide‑risk lexicon linked to 49 risk factors and trained a machine‑learning model on ~16,000 de‑identified Crisis Text Line conversations to classify non‑suicidal, suicidal ideation, and imminent‑risk cases; the work, published in the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science, found mentions of lethal means and substance use were strong predictors of imminent risk. The lexicon contains about 60 words/phrases per risk factor and was curated with clinician input.

OpenAI forms advisory group on mathematics and AI, hosted at Institute for Advanced Study

OpenAI announced an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton to give mathematicians input on the company’s math-focused research. OpenAI said the same internal model recently resolved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem and more than 100 other open problems; the group will assess significance and coordinate releases but won’t have authority over OpenAI’s research pacing.
