Investigation: AI-equipped border surveillance towers failed to prevent migrant deaths near San Diego
A joint investigation by MIT Technology Review and Times of San Diego found that dozens of migrants — including 30-year-old Graciela Gómez Hernández — died within the observable range of surveillance towers along the San Diego border, despite towers (made by General Dynamics and deployed since 2019) using electro-optical/infrared cameras and AI-based detection; a Times of San Diego analysis counted hundreds of cases and at least 138 deaths in the past four years in areas covered by cameras. The report highlights cases in the Otay Mountain Wilderness where terrain, tower placement, and operational factors left people visible to cameras but not rescued, and notes that more than 120 towers stand along the California border.
