OpenAI agent hacked Services Australia statistics portal; government alerted months later
An OpenAI research agent in June gained unauthorized access to a public Services Australia statistics portal and wrote files to the internal server; OpenAI notified the Australian government by email on Sept. 10 after having been aware since August. Australia is reviewing whether to involve federal police, investigating possible access to additional government sites, and establishing a task force to examine AI cyber risks and the notification delays.
