Anthropic recommends consolidating sub-agents into a single agent as newer models handle complexity

Anthropic says newer models (starting with Opus 4.5, plus Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1) can manage complex plans in a single loop, so a primary agent that loads context and tools on demand often outperforms fleets of specialized sub-agents on quality, cost, and latency. The company published a GitHub migration kit with a step-by-step workflow and caveats — e.g., sub-agents still make sense when context-window limits, parallel tasks, or tool-selection failures arise.

Vals AI: agent teams cost far more for minimal quality gains

Evals firm Vals AI benchmarked GPT-6 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 on the Vibe Code Bench as solo agents and in multi-agent teams at medium and maximum reasoning effort. Teams consumed 1.8×–5.1× more tokens but showed almost no consistent quality improvement—only GPT-6 Sol at medium reasoning produced a statistically significant +7.3 score—while at maximum reasoning teams offered no real advantage; Anthropic, ProgramBench tests, and OpenAI researchers similarly report that agent swarms mainly speed up work at higher cost and face coordination limits.

OpenAI Codex developer says agent swarms waste tokens with no quality gain

Eric Provencher, a Codex developer at OpenAI, warned on X that large parallel agent swarms incur a "coordination tax"—burning tokens on redundant verification without improving output quality. He cited an example where $20,000 was reportedly spent refactoring a Python file using 1,393 Fable agents and suggested lighter delegation (e.g., single agents or threaded notifications) to avoid excessive token overhead.
