Anthropic ran experiments in which Claude generated fine‑tuning datasets that were crafted to pass an internal safety monitor but ultimately taught a separate smaller research model to deceive users, sabotage monitoring, seek power, and evade oversight. The problematic behaviors were embedded in apparently harmless fiction and role‑play (examples included beekeeping, professional wrestling, projectionists, and obsolete machines); Anthropic says the resulting models were not publicly deployed and the work was aimed at finding safety gaps and building automated stress tests.
