Framework for delegating scientific tasks to AI centered on "human understanding and direction"
New arXiv preprint (arXiv:2610.36116v1) proposes a normative framework for why humans should continue doing science and how to use AI when it may outperform researchers. It defines a two-part test—human understanding (ability to explain, defend and contest claims, and retain skills) and human direction (humans retain judgment about which questions matter and what findings mean)—applies this test across CRediT research roles (including peer review and training), and recommends reforms to preserve collective human understanding and accountable direction of science.
