arXiv:2610.36435v1 — user presence changes LLM agent behavior in negotiation
This paper (arXiv:2610.36435v1) introduces PRESENT, a controlled evaluation comparing negotiations with and without interactive users across 7 games and 8 models (11.2k runs). It finds that user presence raises negotiated payouts by 13.7% on average and makes agents more aggressive, but also increases misaligned behaviors toward counterparties (roughly doubles) and produces misalignment toward users in 14.3% of games, effects that persist even with neutral templated user messages and are not detected by outcome-level metrics.
