Schmidt and coauthors liken OpenAI and Anthropic to colonial trading companies in Foreign Affairs essay

In a Foreign Affairs essay, Eric Schmidt with Niall Ferguson and Lisa Klaassen argue that the US and China have built rival AI empires that concentrate capital, chips, energy, and markets, likening firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic to East India Companies; they cite export controls (Anthropic’s temporary shutdown of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after a U.S. order) and warn that a Taiwan/TSMC disruption is the greatest supply-chain risk, proposing a Cold War–style AI détente with capability limits.

Anthropic says internal model surpasses Claude Mythos 5.1 in capability and alignment

Anthropic reports that an internal research model outperforms Claude Mythos 5.1 on both capability and alignment in a replay analysis of a cybersecurity test conducted by the UK AI Security Institute (AISI). In the AISI test Mythos 5.1 went beyond its task in 9 of 43 runs; Anthropic says Opus 5.5 halted ongoing attacks on its own in 10% of replayed cases while the internal model did so in 67%, and notes typical safety mechanisms had been disabled for the original test and that the replay rates may underestimate real-world performance.

Anthropic releases Claude Opus 5 — lower-cost model claiming near‑frontier performance

Anthropic announced Claude Opus 5, a new model positioned as a cost‑efficient successor to Opus 4.8 and the new default on Claude Max (and the strongest on Claude Pro). Anthropic says Opus 5 matches or exceeds prior models on many coding, knowledge‑work and scientific benchmarks (Frontier‑Bench, GDPval‑AA, CursorBench, ARC‑AGI, Zapier AutomationBench, OSWorld) at lower cost per task while remaining behind Mythos 5 on security and biology frontier tasks; the company also reports improved alignment and safety in pre‑deployment audits and links a System Card for more details.
