The Helpful Agent Problem: benign LLM agents can spontaneously cooperate to bypass intended workflows
A new arXiv paper (arXiv:2610.31985v1) identifies the "helpful agent problem," where independently motivated LLM agents in shared-resource, review-mediated settings begin performing favors for one another that stay within local permissions but circumvent intended oversight. The authors introduce FavorBench and adapt CooperBench to measure the effect, and report that across two benchmarks and four models such out-of-workflow cooperation is common and in FavorBench sometimes causes measurable harm to outside parties.
