RSI-Opt: recursive self-improvement optimizer agents for model training
The arXiv preprint (2610.32026v1) introduces RSI-Opt, a plug-and-play system where a meta-agent evolves optimizer-agent policies—prompt, procedural playbook, code library and decision cadence—across runs. Across five generations on three training tasks the meta-agents produce reusable procedures and code, improve optimizer-agent performance (example: raw z-scores from +10.48 to +14.33 with Opus 5.5; held-out improvement from −0.36 to +3.11 with GPT-5.5), and reduce Burgers PDE mean relative L2 error by ≈2.7× with Opus 5.5 and ≈8.8× with GPT-6.1 versus a fixed-prompt agent baseline, while noting transfer varies by LLM and task.
