Google says it has established a research hub in Singapore and is investing more than $6 million in grants and capacity-building initiatives across National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and INSEAD’s Thrive Lab to support AI for science, compute efficiency, regional language work, and AI safety research.
Google says it is expanding built-in protections and partnerships to fight scams in the Asia Pacific, highlighting this year’s Android Fake Call Detection (aimed at spotting AI-driven phone-call impersonation), Pixel scam alerts, broader Android developer verification, industry coordination via the Industry Accord and Japan Anti-Scam Alliance, and $6 million in Google.org funding to The Asia Foundation and the Tech for Good Institute for local training and AI defense prototypes.
At the Google for Health Summit in Singapore Google announced a new Google Research hub staffed by local scientists and engineers to advance foundational AI models and partner with institutions such as the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. The company said it will scale health initiatives including using open models like MedGemma in clinical settings, contribute $7 million (via Google.org and DeepMind) to the Philanthropy Asia Alliance’s Health for Human Potential Coalition (including $1M for PathGen), evaluate a DeepMind AI co‑clinician with the National University Health System, and work with NHG Health and Google Cloud to deliver population‑health predictions and an AI health coach powered by Gemini Enterprise on NHG HealthBot.
Google.org is providing $2.5 million to the World Bank Group (including the IFC) under the AgriConnect initiative to expand digital public infrastructure and build an AI-enabled Open Network for Agriculture (ONA) across multiple countries, aiming to help 1 million farmers access services by the end of 2027. ONA will connect public and private service providers so farmers can use a single platform for digital farmer IDs, credit, subsidy payments, markets and local-language voice-powered advice.
Google.org announced 17 recipient organizations for its Impact Challenge: AI for Science, awarding a total of $36 million and offering recipients the option to join a six-month Google.org Accelerator for engineering support, technical mentorship, and Google infrastructure. Selected projects span climate, energy, health, and foundational science — from fusion and battery research to ocean digital twins and AI-driven therapeutics.
Google.org awarded $2.1 million to MIT Transit Lab to fund a three-year project called the Public Transit Intelligence Hub (PTIQ), a centralized AI-orchestrated platform to unify transit agencies’ real-time monitoring, operations control, and passenger communications; Google.org will also provide pro bono engineering and AI product support. PTIQ plans to integrate predictive models, optimization engines and large-language-model based contextual reasoning into a decision‑support interface for control-center staff, leaving final operational decisions to human operators.
At the EDUCAUSE conference Google.org announced support for three higher-education initiatives: USU and APLU’s enhancement of the Urban Adult Learner Institute (integrating Grow with Google and AI lessons across 30 universities), a 15‑month USU project to collect and analyze 10 AI-enhanced community-based learning models, and Education Design Lab’s Reimagining Community Colleges work with a five-college cohort and a planned national competition in early 2027.
Google.org is supporting Jigsaw’s Jigsaw Partner Program with a collaborative fund to expand use of Sensemaking AI—an open-source suite for turning large-scale civic feedback into policy insights—allowing localities to run AI-assisted civic conversations at no operational cost; early deployments include Bowling Green, Chattanooga, Riverside, and Kitchener. Bloomberg Philanthropies and the David & Lucile Packard Foundation are among other philanthropic supporters helping scale the effort.
At the United Nations General Assembly, Google.org announced a $4 million commitment to Digital Promise to help expand free, practical AI training for teachers via the Google AI Educator Series. Digital Promise will develop scalable models and frameworks, work with state education agencies, community college systems, and teacher networks, and publish open research and a public guide for higher education over the next two years.
The UN System launched the UN System Data Commons, an open-source, AI-ready knowledge graph built on Data Commons by Google that integrates UN statistical datasets into a single searchable platform with natural-language search and AI assistant features. Supported by Google.org and the UN Foundation, the platform aims to include 80% of UN system statistical datasets by 2027 and exposes data via standards like the Model Context Protocol so AI agents can fetch authoritative figures.
