Train Qwen3 on AWS Trainium using torchtitan

A torchtitan walkthrough demonstrates three ways to train Qwen3 on a single AWS Trainium trn2.48xlarge: (1) via Transformers v5 backend (AutoModelForCausalLM) reading/writing Hugging Face safetensors; (2) using torchtitan’s native Qwen3Model via config.model_spec; and (3) adding NKI (Neuron Kernel Interface) mixture-of-experts kernels from torchtitan-neuron and attaching custom kernels with the override registry. The post covers environment setup (Neuron PyTorch container or AWS DL AMI), installing torchtitan-neuron, torchrun launch patterns, checkpoint loading/saving (safetensors), and reports a verified step-1 loss example for Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507 (6.54 from published weights vs 12.43 from random init).

arXiv paper introduces SPOKE to improve strategic play of compact poker agents

The paper (arXiv:2610.27028v1) proposes Strategic Preference Optimization with KL-anchored Equilibrium (SPOKE), which combines teacher-relative value penalties, policy anchoring, risk constraints, and structured rationale supervision to improve strategic play under hidden information. Evaluated against SFT, DPO, GRPO, and GSPO on frozen models (SmallThinker, Qwen3, Gemma-3) and three runs of a SmallThinker-4B-A0.6B policy, SPOKE yielded lower mean exploitability in Kuhn (0.213) and Leduc (1.081) and higher six-max top-1 agreement (0.775) while maintaining teacher KL similar to SFT.

Answer configuration determines whether LLMs follow their reasoning trace or current evidence

The arXiv preprint (2610.20805v1) studies how keeping a model's reasoning trace at answer time interacts with verified evidence by comparing two answer configurations: continuation of the model's own thinking versus a separate answer call. Across gpt-oss, Gemma4 and Qwen3 on HotpotQA and MuSiQue, using a separate answer call raises evidence-following by 29.9–60.6 points versus continuation; removing the trace lowers accuracy similarly under both configurations, but continuation disproportionately repeats stale conclusions while a separate call follows current evidence far more often. The paper also finds that the final line of a trace carries most of its value, gold evidence helps most before the trace is written, distractors weaken correction under a separate call, and renewed reasoning (as opposed to a verification instruction) typically follows current evidence in conflicts, leading the authors to recommend reporting both trace benefit and evidence-following alongside answer configuration when evaluating traces.
