OpenAI engineer allegedly used company AI chatbot to plan planting of concealed recording device
A federal criminal complaint alleges OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan used an internal “productivity agent” and an AI chatbot to plan concealing a Seeed XIAO ESP32-S3 Sense audio recorder behind a monitor in an executive conference room; OpenAI discovered the device during a countersurveillance sweep, notified the FBI, disabled his access, and fired him after his arrest. Prosecutors say he faces one charge of intercepting oral communications and could face up to five years in prison; OpenAI says there is no indication of inappropriate access to model weights, source code, or customer data so far.
