OpenAI and Anthropic tell UK MPs voluntary pledges aren’t enough and urge statutory AI rules
Executives from OpenAI and Anthropic told a UK parliamentary committee that voluntary commitments no longer suffice for frontier AI safety and backed a statutory regulatory framework and some mandatory measures such as incident reporting; Google DeepMind and Meta declined to support new legislation. The session also highlighted limits of Britain’s AI Security Institute (AISI), which currently inspects models only with company cooperation, and included MI5 warnings about AI-enabled biothreats.
