AnyLanguageModel 1.0 released with swift-huggingface and swift-xet 1.0, enabling local and hosted models on Apple platforms

AnyLanguageModel 1.0 is out alongside swift-huggingface 1.0 and swift-xet 1.0, offering a drop-in API that lets Swift apps on iOS, macOS, visionOS and Linux use Foundation Models-compatible local models (via llama.cpp, MLX, Core ML) or hosted providers (Hugging Face, Anthropic Messages API, OpenRouter and OpenAI-compatible endpoints). New features include guided generation across providers, image support using Foundation Models 27 syntax, reasoning transcript handling, short-lived API key closures, and migration guidance for existing apps.

MLX enables local and multi‑Mac inference of Muse Spark Open (816B) on Mac Studio

The MLX array framework added Apple Silicon support and demonstrates running frontier LLMs locally and in a distributed setup on Mac Studio. Using the latest MLX release and RDMA over Thunderbolt, a four‑node Mac Studio cluster runs Muse Spark Open (816B, MoE, NVFP4) at >36 tokens/s; smaller models (Qwen 3.8 and Mistral Medium 3.5) can fit on a single 512GB Mac Studio. Benchmarks with mlx_lm.benchmark report up to 4.6× faster time‑to‑first‑token and ~1.6× higher tokens/s on M5 Ultra versus M3 Ultra, and modest peak power (~200–300W) for inference.

Minions: distributed virtual GPU cloud using idle Apple Silicon macOS devices

The paper introduces Minions, a system that aggregates idle GPUs in Apple Silicon–based macOS devices into a dynamic, distributed virtual GPU cloud for large-scale machine learning inference, providing flexible task execution, fault tolerance, and improved resource utilization so teams can use existing hardware instead of buying additional GPUs. The work also situates this effort alongside related Apple Silicon tooling (MLX, M5 neural accelerators) and separate NVIDIA-focused inference work (ReDrafter).
