Preprint: scoring proposed code edits to guide recursive self‑improvement of coding agents

The arXiv preprint (arXiv:2610.29121v1) proposes methods for cheaply scoring proposed scaffold edits of a coding agent before executing them, fitting a linear readout on a parent's steering-split solve rate plus edit features and using a Huxley–Gödel Machine selection scheme (Thompson sampling) to choose which edits to expand. Evaluated on HumanEval+ and Polyglot splits, twelve GPT-4o runs returned a node with 87.0% held-out HumanEval+ score (vs. 84.2% for a parent-rate ablation); Huxley–Gödel selection reached 85.1% while Claude Sonnet 4.5 reached 86.6% on the same split, with comparable baselines reported for root and calibration-best edits.

Verification and self-improvement limits for agentic AI (arXiv:2610.10611v1)

This paper develops a formal framework for how agentic AI systems can improve via longer search, extra support, or changes to proposal/verification processes, using bounded verification with hidden terminal randomness. It defines stages (admissible transcripts, verifier, terminal checker), native reach and closure frontier languages, proves preservation under independent majority amplification but risks from existential acceptance over random tapes, relates randomized-verifier classes (Σ_k^{RV}) to classical complexity classes, and analyzes bounded recursive self-improvement, evidence/sampling audits, and a quota-enforced XOR-synthesis separation.

Vals raises $40M Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz to build proprietary AI benchmarks

Vals, a 2024-founded startup that provides paid, non-public, industry-specific AI evaluations, raised $40 million in a Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz after a seed round backed by 8VC and Bloomberg Beta. The company tests models on complex domain tasks (law, finance, coding) and emerging areas such as recursive self-improvement, mental health, cybersecurity, biosecurity and law of armed conflict; revenue and headcount have grown rapidly and it has launched a program for federal agencies.

Why Many AI Researchers Fear Machines Could Kill Everyone

The article reports that a combination of rapid advances in AI, concerns about recursive self-improvement, and the development of agentic swarms is ‘‘spooking people’’ inside major AI labs, leading many researchers to voice fears about extreme, potentially existential risks from advanced systems. It summarizes the growing unease among experts rather than presenting a definitive prediction.
