Karpathy: the external world has only seen a 'preview' of AI; small group sees frontier capabilities
Andrej Karpathy, an OpenAI co‑founder who joined Anthropic, warned that public perception of chatbots understates current AI power. He estimates roughly 6 billion people have little exposure to LLMs, 1–2 billion are casual users, about 20 million professionals use frontier models for math and code, and only ~5,000 people access internal frontier-grade systems that show capabilities far beyond everyday chatbots.
