Goodfire researcher Nick Cammarata claims LLMs far easier to understand in long blog post

Nick Cammarata of AI startup Goodfire published a 26,000‑word blog post arguing that large language models may be substantially more interpretable—and thus easier to monitor and control—than many researchers believe. The post has prompted strong reactions across the field, from excitement about a possible mechanistic breakthrough to skepticism that the claim is mostly a hunch.

Goodfire's Nick Cammarata argues neural networks are largely interpretable in new essay

In a long essay titled "Neural Networks Are Already Clean," Goodfire researcher Nick Cammarata reinterprets classic examples of polysemantic neurons and argues that most neuron activations are understandable using scaled-up, automated neuron analysis; he reports ~90% of neuron poles in Qwen3-32B have a single main role and only 2–4% remain unexplained, and says earlier superposition interpretations were often mistaken. The essay has drawn enthusiastic praise from some (including OpenAI poster Roon) and caution from others (including DeepMind's Neel Nanda), and Goodfire says it sees similar results in larger models though independent confirmation is pending.

Goodfire launches internal-activation monitors on Baseten to catch rogue AI agents

Goodfire launched cheaper “inside-out” monitors that read a model’s internal activations (probes) in real time and are available to Baseten customers; in tests on Kimi K3 the probes flagged 94% of malicious hacking sessions, sent 8.7% of benign sessions for review, and monitoring ~1,500 sessions cost about $51 vs $233–$10,000 for alternative checkers. Baseten’s Base Labs had announced a safety partnership with Goodfire and Hugging Face last month, and Goodfire cites similar research from Google DeepMind informing probe-based detection in Gemini.
